You should aim for a higher output than input. Spend more time speaking and writing, even if you think your vocabulary is limited. It’s better to build a very solid base then to try and spread yourself too thin learning a lot of vocabulary in a short space of time.

I work full-time as an English teacher and I cannot help but mix the languages that I already know (3 languages). I always set a goal (1 chapter / 1 lesson) a week. I don’t overdo anything. Moreover, whenever I make mistakes in using Japanese I just laugh. I don’t take everything seriously, like seriously why would you?

I think it depends on what your goal is. For example, if your goal is to pass a JLPT level, then it's best to focus on reviewing and studying the vocabulary/grammar/phrases of that level with your JapaTalk teacher. If your goal is to be able to speak more fluently with everyday communication (such as living in Japan), then having lots of Free Talk lessons with the JapaTalk teachers will boost your confidence and ability to live in Japan easier.

Always engage yourself in Japanese conversation or anything where you can practice your Japanese skills. It can be through watching Japanese movies or tv, reading manga, listening to a Japanese podcast. Even if you don't take lessons every day, this kind of exposure to the language makes it a lot easier to learn or remember words rather than just reading from a textbook!

I guess we all have to learn the vocabulary by books and then apply them by having a conversation with someone. Having to talk with others in Japanese is a good practice even if it’s a struggle at first.

I suppose reading about a topic and then discussing it is a helpful way to "read to learn." In the past, I also used Anki flashcards quite often to memorize words. These days I'm rather busy, but I still enjoy casual conversation.

I suggest to non-japanese native students to learn using textbook guidance (I use Genki book) because it helps us learn step-by-step. It starts with learning how to read hiragana & katakana letters, then learn how to greet and use greeting phrases in daily conversation, then how to use numbers in Japanese and continue gradually to more difficult subjects.

I use JapaTalk and my lessons as supplemental to my own studying. I am a procrastinator and I often lose motivation in studying. Since I started my lessons at Japatalk I became more motivated to do my workbook and study on my own. Then during my actual lesson, I will use that time to check and clarify some points for clarification with my teacher.

It is important to allocate more time to study Japanese everyday. If it is not possible everyday, then at least clock roughly about 8 hours to 12 hours per week. For listening practice, try a few listening practice, be it JLPT listening, normal conversation by Japanese, drama, variety shows etc. Read a variety of books.
I would recommend frequent practice of writing Kanji for non Chinese learners and try to associate the Kanji strokes with images of pictures or understand why the Kanji character is written as such.
Lastly, it is alright to make mistakes. We all learn from our mistakes, don't we?
